Could it be any more heartbreaking? Friends icon Matthew Perry’s tragic death has shattered millions of fans across the world as they say farewell to the man behind Chandler Bing. One episode in particular is making fans emotional as fans re-watch the beloved show.

Matthew Perry‘s career included a number of iconic shows including Friends, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and The Kennedys: After Camelot. The 54-year-old celebrity also appeared for a special HBO Max Friends reunion in 2021. The original cast reunited to speak about the impact the show had left on all of them. As viewers mourn the beloved star, one particular scene from the TV show has been highlighted in tributes pouring out on social media. It definitely hits differently now…

Friends scene with Chandler and Joey ‘hits differently’ now

There’s one particular scene doing the rounds on TikTok.

Friends’ fans witnessed quite a few goodbyes during the show, albeit some of them were temporary. In season 2, Joey’s (Matt LeBlanc) career takes off as he gets his breakthrough with Days Of Our Lives. He chooses to move out of their famous apartment, leaving Chandler (Matthew Perry) behind.

While initially, Chandler is not on board with the idea of losing Joey as his roommate, he respects his decision. Episode 16 marks the scene where Joey is packing all of his stuff and moving out of the apartment.

Both friends are determined not to show their heartbreak, as Joey says: “Listen, I don’t know when will I see you again.”

To which Chandler replies, “I am guessing, tonight at the coffee house.”

Joey leaves the room but quickly comes back for a hug, a telltale sign of how much he will ‘miss’ Chandler, just like the rest of the world is ready to give Chandler a final hug.

‘Friends’ community reacts to Matthew’s passing

Friends was not just a show but a cultural phenomenon for American television. It is considered to be the ultimate comfort show and the one that can reunite millennials and Gen Z. With Matthew Perry’s passing, it feels like the end of an era, and makers of Friends are as heartbroken as viewers across the world.

Marta Kauffman, David Crane, and Kevin Bright, the co-creators and the executive producer of the show expressed their grief at the tragic demise of the star.

They said: “We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing. It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives.”

“It’s a cliché to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us. We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment – not just to his work, but in life as well.

“He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart. We send all of our love to his family and friends.

“This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.”
